Red light therapy has been studied for decades, but most of that research sits in journals that are hard to access and harder to interpret. Marketing copy fills the gap, and it varies wildly from one product to the next.
Our aim is to gather what the published research actually says, summarize it in plain language, and keep it free to read — no account, no paywall, no newsletter required.
That same approach shapes which masks appear here. Rather than covering every device on the market, we work from a fixed checklist of five specifications: proven wavelengths, even LED distribution, contact-fit construction, a verifiable FDA 510(k) clearance, and a design built for consistent use. Devices that don't meet the checklist don't appear in our rankings.

A small group working from published sources.
Redlight Ratings is a small group with a shared interest in how at-home red light devices are built and what the published evidence behind them supports. We spend our time reading studies, working through manufacturer specification sheets, and checking claims against public records — then writing up what we find.
We are not a laboratory and not a clinic. What we can offer is time spent with the source material and the same set of criteria applied to every device we list.
What we work from
Published research — Peer-reviewed studies and clinical reviews on photobiomodulation, cited where we reference them.
Manufacturer specifications — Wavelength, irradiance, and LED counts as published by the manufacturer.
Public FDA records — 510(k) clearance numbers checked against the FDA's own database.
Publicly available sources only — Everything we publish is drawn from sources anyone can look up for themselves. We don't work from private, confidential, or unpublished information.
What we don't do
We don't run laboratory tests or clinical trials, and we don't measure device output ourselves.
